The Widow’s Walk program at All Saints’ provides women who are grieving the loss of a partner with support at a time when they need it the most.
Started 10 years ago, the program brings widows of all ages and stages of grief together monthly for fellowship, spiritual renewal and support. The camaraderie that results can be life affirming.
Widow’s Walk meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m., usually for dinner at members’ homes. In-between meetings, they occasionally plan outings to a movie or special event in town. Once, says member Rose Rogers, a few of them took a cruise together.
“It’s really been a lifeline for me,” says Rose, who joined the group in 2011, just a month after her husband died. “I don’t have family here, like some of the women do. I am alone. So it’s been good to know there is someone to reach out to. We’ve all become such good friends.”
Lynne Walker, who started the group along with Beth Mason, coordinates planning the monthly meetings and also contacts members in the time between. She says Widow’s Walk started as a ministry for All Saints’ members, but through the years it has expanded its outreach to members’ friends and family who are also widows and in need of support. She said there are about 14 women in the group at present.
“This group has been such a strength to me,” Lynne says. “It has been a blessing to have others to walk this walk together, at a time we didn’t choose. I have made dear friends I wouldn’t have made otherwise.”
