Shrove Tuesday:
The day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Its name comes from it being one of the days of confession (shriving) in the Church year. Anglicans often make pancake suppers since in older days people fasted from animal food during Lent and the pancakes used the last of the fat in a house before Lent began.
For this reason, it is also known as Fat Tuesday.
