See:
From the Latin sedes ("seats"). Originally used to refer to the bishop's seat or cathedra, the earliest of all symbols of authority. The seat was kept in the cathedral, and the bishop's see was the town where the cathedral was located. Now the word is used (primarily by Roman Catholics) to refer to a whole diocese (e.g., the Pope is Bishop of Rome or of the "Holy See").
