815:
A short reference to the main office complex of the Episcopal Church in New York City: Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017.
Anglican/Anglican Communion/Church: Literally, "English." The term usually refers to the Church of England and the worldwide assemblage of autonomous churches in communion with it. That assemblage, including the Episcopal Church, is known as the Anglican Communion. As of April 2004, there are 43 self-governing - and largely self-supporting - provinces (regions) of the Communion, 630 dioceses located in more than 164 countries, making up 76,650,449 people world-wide.
Anglican can also be a noun, a member of the Anglican Communion by virtue of the fact that one is a member of an Anglican province (region).
Apostolic Succession:
Episcopalians, along with other Anglicans, Roman Catholics, Orthodox
and some other Christian sects, trace their bishops' spiritual
heritage in an unbroken line back to the
apostles of Jesus.
The
importance of the historic episcopate is a major point in ecumenical
discussions and relations. |
