Alb:
Sometimes called an albe.
From the Latin for "white", symbolizing purity. A long white or
undyed linen basic garment (shoulders to ankles) worn by clergy who
celebrate the Holy Communion in Eucharistic vestments. The alb is
worn with an amice. The alb can be worn by an acolyte or crucifer. It is derived from the under-tunic worn in Roman times.
Amice: A large square or rectangular piece of white cloth with strings attached. It is worn under the alb as a hood, over the shoulders, or collar. The strings are wound and tied around the chest and waist. Often called the 'helmet of salvation' by clergy.
