All Saints' Honduras Mission Team II
We would first like to
thank our Lord and All Saints for leading us to a ministry in
Honduras. Our first sight of this beautiful but rugged country was
from the air. It is very mountainous and the airport is nestled in
what appears to be one of the few relatively flat areas in the
mountains. By our standards, it was a very short landing strip in
the process of being repaved.
We were met by the
wonderful Canon Kathy Pennybacker and her standard poodle Skylar.
This pair is a formable magnet for the children everywhere we
traveled. Skylar is the best behaved dog we have ever meet. The
children almost always gather around these two . He is called the
white ghost by the children who adore him.
What is most impressive
is the fact that the Episcopal church in Honduras is known as the
church that helps people. Bishop Allen’s vision is to help provide
basic services such as basic health care, education, and to
establish micro enterprises and a church that is self sustaining.
The people are so warm
and loving. Children take care of entertaining each other. They use
their imagination and have a wonderful time. They do not need the
expensive toys our children in the USA must have. They are content
to use their fine minds.
Their life is difficult
by our standards but they have something we have lost. A deep
commitment to family and in the cases where they have learned about
Jesus a deep commitment to Him.
Many villages we visited
did not have adequate water or sewer. The Episcopal church is
working to correct this problem by digging wells and putting in
latrines.
We would like to share a
few examples of the commitment to Jesus we saw in Honduras.
A young man who is the
youth director and the music director at one of the churches, works
in a cigar factory to single handedly raise his brothers and
sisters. This young man has put his own life on hold for his family.
His only prayer at this time is always to be able to have a job. His
priest sees a future priest in this young man but it isn’t possible
at this time. Another man we met has 11 children. He earns $150 a
month but pays $15 a month to rent a room for church services for a
small struggling church in the worst part of Tegucigalpa.
The stories of self
sacrifice are endless. We hope that you will join us in financially
supporting this wonderful ministry in Honduras. We can do so much
with such a small amount by our standards.
We have begun to put our
small change in a jar each day earmarked for Honduras. Can’t each
and everyone of us think of a way to give from our excess to help
our brothers and sisters in Christ?
