The First Holy Communion classes are open to 2nd and 3rd
grades youth who are baptized members of All Saints’. The classes
begin each fall on the Sunday after Labor Day and continue for,
generally, 8 weeks, (depending on the church calendar).
The children learn about the Last Supper and the meaning of
communion in the church. They take a tour of the church, receive
instruction from a member of the Altar Guild, and spend one Sunday
with the verger visiting the vesting rooms learning about the
different types and colors of vestments. They also receive an
introduction to the Prayer Book and learn some of the traditional
etiquette of the church, such as making the sign of the cross, bowing
and kneeling at appropriate times.
When the youth take their First Holy Communion, girls are asked to
wear a white dress and white shoes - a veil is optional. Boys are
asked to wear white shirts, khaki slacks and a conservative tie - a
jacket is optional.
Parents are asked to attend the last class, which meets in the
church. At that class, the families are instructed on the details of
the First Holy Communion service and the children rehearse processing
in and out of the church.
Following the First Holy Communion service, which is held at 8:50
am on a Sunday, there is a cake and punch reception.
