Katharine Jefferts Schori,
DD, PhD (born March 26, 1954 in Pensacola,
Florida) is the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. She is the first
woman elected primate in the Anglican Communion.
Presiding Bishops are elected to their nine-year
term by the House of Bishops with the concurrence of
the House of Deputies.
She was
previously the Bishop of Nevada. She is now chief pastor to the Episcopal
Church's 2.4 million members
in 16 countries and 110
dioceses, ecumenical officer, and primate, joining
leaders of the other 38 Anglican Provinces
in
consultation for global good and reconciliation.
Bishop Schori was elected at the 75th General
Convention on June 18, 2006 and invested
at
the Washington National Cathedral on November 4, 2006.
