He was born in Milan, Tennessee on June 30, 1946. He graduated from Grove High School in Paris, Tennessee in 1964. He married Vivian Rogers in 1966. Vivian is from Sanford, North Carolina. They have a son, Michael Jenkins, daughter-in-law Rebecca Jenkins, and a granddaughter Mary Jenkins. Al volunteered and served in the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1965-1968. He was employed by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company before being called into the ministry.

Al was raised a Southern Baptist and Vivian was raised Presbyterian. They joined the Episcopal Church and were confirmed in Jackson, Tennessee in 1974.

Al holds AA (Sandhills, Southern Pines, North Carolina), BS (Lambuth College, Jackson, Tennessee), M.Div. (University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee), Doctor of Ministry (Sewanee/Vanderbilt University Joint Doctoral Program) degrees, plus he completed post-graduate studies in pastoral care (Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia). They served briefly in the diocese of Southwest Florida (Bishop Paul Haines), but almost all of their career has been served in the Diocese of Central Florida in one mission, two parishes, and two deaneries under Bishop Folwell and Bishop Howe.

They have served the Diocese of Central Florida for 25 years - 21 of those years at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Lakeland. He has been active in community leadership and deanery leadership (Dean of the SW Deanery). He has also been active on many Commissions, Committees, and assignments in the Diocese of Central Florida - including the Diocesan Board and the Diocesan Executive Committee three times. In 2010 he completed a three year elected term on the Standing Committee, serving as President in 2010. In January, he was re-elected to the Standing Committee and he was re-elected by the Standing Committee as President for 2011. As the President, he chairs the search for the next Bishop of Central Florida.

Al is pleased with the spiritual and numerical growth of All Saints', the completion of the Anchor of Faith vision and building program, and the new four-story Foundation for the Future building program that is underway. Father Al is thankful so much has been accomplished by the people of All Saints'. Since 1989 All Saints' has grown from the 7th largest parish in the Diocese to the 3rd largest parish. The budget has grown from $275,000 to almost a million dollars and in 2010, All Saints' had the highest average Sunday attendance in the Diocese.

He looks forward to completing the present building program, making sure the parish is debt-free after the building program, and developing and maturing several ministries.

His hobbies are spending time with his family, going for walks, movies, gardening, and writing children's stories. His favorite football team is the University of Tennessee Volunteers. Vivian's hobbies are gourmet cooking, playing bridge with her girl friends, traveling, and decorating the church at Lessons & Carols and Christmas with members of the parish. Her favorite football teams are the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and the University of Florida Gators. Vivian and Al just finished traveling in 2010 through Nevada and California.

Courses he teaches in All Saints' Parish Academy are Moral History & Dilemmas, Christian Ethics, Biblical Ethics, The History of Postmodernism, History of the Bible, Old Testament, New Testament, History of Christian Spirituality, and Episcopal Church History.

His highest goals in ministry are peace, growth, and financial strength. He values people he can trust, those who have a sense of humor, and those who are humble. He dislikes racism and elitism and war.

The Rev. Rick Hoover was born in Springfield, Missouri. Rick earned his BA in Writing at Southwest Missouri State University. He met his wife, Melanie, in a young adults class at church the week she arrived from Michigan for a new job. They married in 1974 and have since lived in Ohio, Illinois and Florida.

As a Christian radio broadcaster Rick visited many churches and came to love the sacramental and liturgical heritage of the Episcopal Church. In fact, the very first Episcopal Church service Rick attended was a healing service in 1979 at All Saints’ Church in Lakeland, in St. Mary’s chapel. After Rick and Melanie returned to Florida in 1987 they attended All Saints' for over a decade before Rick began his studies to become a deacon. He was ordained in December of 2007. In 2011 Rick took on the role of Director of Communications for the parish, handling the church bulletins, newsletters, and email notices. Rick also edits the All Saints' Facebook group page.

Rick has served on the All Saints’ vestry, Education Council, and as a verger and Lay Eucharistic Minister. He is a Chaplain of the Order of St. Luke at All Saints'. He teaches in the Sunday morning Adult Forums and occasionally in various youth classes (pictures of Rick dressed up as Samson are hidden elsewhere on the church web page).

For the Parish Academy on Wednesday nights, Rick has taught courses on the Old and New Testament, A History of the Church and Christianity, the Thirty-Nine Articles, Elements of the Spiritual Life, and The Prayer Laboratory. These latter two subjects grew out of Rick’s interest in the contemplative disciplines of the early Church Fathers. Rick and Melanie lead a weekly centering prayer group in their home to encourage personal spiritual growth in “all saints!”

Rick has written books, articles for national publications, and produced audio and video projects.  He is especially proud of working with his father, Mario, in publishing the first English translation of a memoir by Rick’s great-grandfather, the Rev. Willis Hoover, a Methodist-Episcopal missionary to Chile. The book recounts a famous revival in Pastor Hoover’s church in 1909 (“A History of the Pentecostal Revival in Chile”) and has been welcomed by many contemporary church historians.
